Helen C. Berkley, 100, of Janesville, WI passed away on Monday, April 4, 2011, at Cedar Crest in Janesville.

 

 Helen C. Berkley was born September 3, 1910 in Fort Atkinson, WI, the daughter of Hans and Bertha Christensen. She graduated from Fort Atkinson High School and Wisconsin State Teachers College in Whitewater (UW Whitewater). Mrs. Berkley taught school for 31 years, mostly in Janesville at Adams, Lincoln and Roosevelt schools. She married Douglas Berkley on April 4,1936. Helen was active at First Lutheran Church where she was involved in country crafters, First Lutheran Church Women, Senior Citizens Group, Sunday School, Altar Guild, Senior Citizen’s Committees, Funeral Service Luncheon Group, and often served as a greeter. Mrs. Berkley was a member of the Rock Historical Society, Retired Teachers Association, Woman’s Club, Eastern Star, Cedar Crest Auxiliary and Mercy Hospital Auxiliary. Helen was an avid Badger, Packer and Brewers fan. She enjoyed playing cards of all kinds, especially bridge. In her earlier retirement years, she appreciated and enjoyed the opportunity of traveling to many European and Scandinavian countries. Above all, Helen’s family was the most important to her. She was an extremely proud grandmother/great grandmother and will be remembered for her loving and supportive nature.                                                                                                                                   Mrs. Berkley’s family includes 3 sons: Ronald Berkley of Fort Myers, FL, John (Kay) Berkley of Janesville, Todd (Jane) Berkley of Rochester Hills, MI, 7 grandchildren: Cory, Cynthia (Bill) Davey, Derek (Lorie), Sheena (Wade) Hanson, Krista, Lauren and Samuel, 4 great-grandchildren: Helana, William Jr. and Dalton, children of Cynthia (Bill) Davey and Ella Marie, daughter of Derek (Lorie) Berkley. Her husband, Douglas Berkley preceded her in death in November, 1985. She is also preceded in death by her parents, and 3 brothers: Jennings, Harold and Elmer Christensen. Helen’s family extends a special “thank you” to the kind, caring and attentive staff at Cedar Crest. The wonderful care Helen received was greatly appreciated.

 

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, April 11, 2011 at First Lutheran Church, 612 N. Randall Avenue, Janesville. Rev. James Melvin will officiate.
